Replacement for Fordax – Accident and Incident Reporting Database

Key Information

The Ford Motor Company is the third largest car manufacturer in the world and the second largest in Europe.  Bridgend Engine Plant (BEP) was opened in 1980, employs over 1700 people and supplies Ford Assembly Plants worldwide with 540,000 engines a year.  Additionally, Bridgend Engine Plant also supplies both Land Rover and Jaguar with over 145,000 engines a year.

Project Aims

The safety of all employees and co-workers is the number one priority for the Ford Motor Company.  In order to assist BEP with our safety objectives we have operated, for a number of years, an accident and incident reporting database called Fordax   

Fordax records all accidents and incidents within a Microsoft Access database and sends out automated e-mails to inform relevant personal that such an event has occurred.  The system’s database assists BEP with our legal obligations and also permits us to carry out in-depth trend analysis of all accidents and incidents.  The trend analysis review ensures that we have to up-to-date information as to what our greatest causation of accidents and incidents is, whilst also giving us key information in a text and graphical form showing the demographic and human factors that contributed to the causation.

BEP has a long history of working closely with educational institutions.  These working relationships have helped the development of students by improving their competence levels, whilst at the same time, improving the Plant’s performance levels.  Presently, the Plant has started a 3-year PhD programme with Cardiff Metropolitan University on Safety Culture, with the aim of assessing strengths and highlighting improvement opportunities with the Plant.  Having access to a fully functioning Fordax system will be essential for on-going research.

Suitable candidate 

Currently the Fordax system, which is based on a MS Access front end, will no longer be compatible with a Company-wide rollout of Windows 10 and Office 2016.  As such, a new application is required and needs to be developed and operate within Ford Global I.T. policies and procedures.  

We are looking for a flexible solution that can build on the experience of the current system and potentially carry back the historical SQL data into the new developed system. Data security is critical and user access will need to be queried via Ford’s Corporate Directory System (CDS) in order to ensure correct levels of authorised access.

The solution itself is not prescriptive, but consideration needs to be given to access from various types of devices, including desktop PC, tablets and other mobile devices and should allow for expansion to other Ford sites globally. Ideally the solution should include predictive analysis of the collected data in order to identify areas of opportunity and risk to employees. In addition to risk analysis of job type and area of work it is important to identify vulnerable individuals who accident records may suggest that intervention is needed to prevent further injury.

The successful candidate will work closely with the on-site Health and Safety team as well as the engineering group to develop a solution that will be worthy of submission for the Ford Motor Company Presidents Health and Safety Award, with the ultimate aim of becoming the benchmark software to be utilised across the company for accident recording and reduction.

It is important that the candidate is proficient in database administration and aware of current server side and cloud based technologies that could be applied in order to establish a creative and effective solution. Some background knowledge of engineering and health and safety would be advantageous but is not essential

Eligibility

Candidates should hold an Engineering or Physical Sciences degree with a minimum classification level of 2:1 or equivalent relevant experience. 

 Our funders require applicants to also meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • You must be a UK or EU citizen (i.e. eligible for ‘home’ tuition fees at the University) and have the right to work in Wales at the end of your studies.
  • You must be resident in West Wales and the Valleys at the point of enrolment and throughout the duration of your studies.
  • You must not be financially able to participate without the award of grant funding.

Funding

The studentship covers the full cost of UK/EU tuition fees, plus a tax free stipend of £12,500 p.a.
